Back to School Makeup : Review & Tutorial of Mattify Cosmetics Long Lasting Eye Shadow for Oily Skin

Almost back to school time girls! Here are some awesome colors that will be perfect for a daytime school look. These shades will work for anyone, whether you are just starting to wear makeup or if you're a pro.  These eye shadows are meant to highlight your peepers, for a bright eyed fall makeup look.

If you think that just because you have oily skin, you can only wear matte eye makeup – Think Again!!
These mineral eye shadows that come from Mattify Cosmetics do not look matte on the skin, but they contain ingredients that soak up skin oils.  Know what this means? NO CREASING! NO SMUDGING! LONG WEARING!  Yes, these claims are something of a dream for those of us with oily skin, but Mattify's Long Lasting Eye Shadow is up to the challenge.

I really like to use light colors of eye shadow for daytime wear, because 1) they're easy to apply when I'm half awake in the morning and 2) they brighten up my complexion without looking over done. The colors above are so amazingly pretty, and give you a put together look with barely any effort at all. Just swipe on some black eye liner, and use either the Iced Apricot, Snow Bunny, or Fields of Gold on lids... and you're ready to go!

COMING SOON!  I will do a detailed review on the Mattify Ultra Powder. This is a transparent powder, so will be kind of tough to swatch. You won’t be able to see much, but I’ll give it a try, and will also write a longer description of application advice, and what the powder can do for your oily skin.

The Mattify Cosmetics Eye Makeup feels velvety soft during application, and these are so easily applied that I can even use my finger tip when I’m in a mad dash to get out of the house in the morning. Of course, they look best when applied with a shadow brush, but the lighter shades are my go-to colors for “dash and go” application. I actually own 6 colors so far, and am slowly building up to getting the whole collection. These only cost $5 each, so it’s easy to build your collection quickly.

                       SMOKEY EYE
WOODLAND FAIRY & FIELDS OF GOLD

My favorite color for creating a smokey eye is the Woodland Fairy. This is a brownish-gold shadow that I will also highlight in my "Fall Eye Makeup" portion of the blog - because this will be a must-have color for fall.

Sometimes, I apply the Woodland Fairy to the crease of my eye, and then put some Fields of Gold onto the center of my lids. This gives you a smashing smokey eye without looking too heavy. For more of an evening look, I use the Woodland Fairy on my entire lid & crease, and then go over it with the Fields of Gold. This gives a more dramatic darker look, with some amazingly gorgeous sparkle. Looks beautiful for a night of partying under bright lights!

   Application

Some of the colors are pretty light, so I usually apply two coats. The good part is, if you want a darker more dramatic look, you can apply two coats. But if you want a light, daytime look, you can use one coat. I’ve noticed that patting them on with my finger tip or brush works really well, and allows them to look a little more glittery. I also reeeallly love that they can be used as eye liner. Here's how:
·         Get your hands on some of the Benefit She Laq Makeup Sealer. This is an awesome long lasting makeup sealant that works well on eye shadow but not so well on lipstick, as it tends to feel very sticky on the lips and never quite dries. You can find it at Sephora, Ulta, or the Benefit Cosmetics website for around $25. The Benefit She Laq will turn these Mattify Cosmetics Shadows into waterproof eye liner that stays put until you wash it off.
·         Dip a liner brush into the She Laq so that it’s just barely coated in the liquid.
·         Dab the liner brush into your choice of Mattify Cosmetics Eye Shadow
·         Sweep onto eye lid along lash line, on upper and/or lower lash lines
*In the swatch below, I used a very thick shadow brush, so you could see the colors in the picture.
A thick brush like I used will work if you wish to apply the shadow across your entire lid.
If you want a thinner line, just for eye liner, use a skinny liner brush.

Swatches of Mattify! Cosmetics Long Lasting Mineral Eye Shadows - Used as Eye Liner
From Left to Right:  Lucky Penny, Woodland Fairy, Iced Apricot

Since these are loose mineral powders, sometimes the powder flakes around my eyes during application, but it wipes away very easily with my finger tip. The only one which which I’ve had fall-out trouble with is the Woodland Fairy, as it is a darker color. I’ve learned to apply this one BEFORE my other makeup so that it doesn’t leave any brown streaks under my eyes.

In short, the Mattify Cosmetics brand of Eye Shadow is the best eye makeup I’ve ever purchased. It comes in 16 different colors, and the ones I’ve tried are super high pigment and do not fade all day long. Another thing? I LOVE the sparkle in them!! Since I’m such a makeup junkie, I’ve tried hundreds of eye shadows. Some look overly glittery, others feel gritty, others look glittery in the package - but then fall flat when applied. I’m the type of girl who can’t wear matte eye makeup – it makes me look completely dead. It’s a must that my eye makeup contain some kind of shimmer, or I end up looking like a zombie.

                      Company / Ingredient Information
                                on Mattify! Cosmetics

Mattify Cosmetics are all mineral based loose powders, and made in the USA by the company in Reno Nevada. I emailed them to find out where the minerals come from that they use in the products, and found out that all but a few of the Iron Oxides in the Eye Shadows come from the USA. Some of the Iron Oxides come from India. The Eye Shadow seems pretty gentle and hasn’t irritated my eyes at all, even when I’m wearing contacts. Best of all, these contain NO BISMUTH, which I am highly allergic to. It's almost impossible to find mineral makeup without Bismuth.

                                 Other Products from Mattify! Cosmetics

For the past couple of months, I’ve been using their Mattify Ultra Powder for oily skin.  Let me tell you…if you have oily skin, this is a must-have product! I seriously carry one in my car, have one at work, one in my purse, and one in each bathroom at home. It feels like I have tried a bazillion things to stop my oily skin and this tiny little jar of powder is the only thing in the world that works for me! It’s a borderline obsession I have with this product & here’s why:
It helps makeup stay on without streaking or smudging, even during hot humid weather.
It makes it look like your skin has no pores and no imperfections.
It stops greasy oily shine from appearing on your face for several hours
It has stopped my skin from breakouts out since I started putting it on before my makeup.
It can be used for touch ups over your makeup all day long without leaving residue

Any of these products will be great for a back to school makeup look. They're super easy to apply and are very long lasting, so you won't have to mess with your makeup at school!
